The Gran Paradiso massif is well known for hosting the only 4000 m peak entrirely in italian territory and for being the first large protected area established in Italy (Gran Paradiso National Park).
Most tourists visit the northern side of the park in the Aosta valley, for trekking and ski touring. The southern side is far less known, with the only expception of the lower Orco valley which became a top destination for rock climbers in the summer.
We propose here one full week of ski touring in the Orco valley (also named valle Locana), at the discovery of the most beautiful itineraries of this secluded region. The highest summits exceed 3600 m elevation and can be climbed in one day, or two days with overninght in a mountaiìn hut.
As usual the diffculty and length of the itineraries may be choosen according to the team’s technical level and fitness; however, in general this area is most suitable to medium and advanced ski-mountaineers.
There are no ski resorts in the valley, therefore peace and wilderness are guaranteed. Also there are no luxury hotels or lodges, but a few cozy guesthouses offering the warm hospitality and excellent cuisine of the genuine Piedmont mountaineers.
Best months for ski touring in the region are march and april, sometimes may too.
- one or more days (or a full week programme) of steep skiing,: a wide choice of lines, from the super classic Colle Perduto 3285 m (ideal for entry-level steep skiers) to the little known Rocca Maunero north couloir 2387 m or the more challenging Testa di Money SE face 3562 m;
